House Democrats demand resignation of U.S. Attorney John Durham

Since he took office, Democrats have been calling for Attorney General Bill Barr to step down. However, they’ve now added a new name to their hit list.

11 prominent House Democrats, including Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), signed a letter demanding that U.S. Attorney for Connecticut John Durham resign as well.

Democrats demand Barr, Durham resign

“We write to call for your and U.S. Attorney John Durham’s immediate resignation,” the Democrats wrote, “because you inappropriately interfered in independent Department of Justice (DOJ) investigations and intentionally used your positions to mislead the American public in defense of President Donald J. Trump.”

The statement was written by Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) and signed by Reps. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), Rashida Tlaib, (D-MI), William Lacy Clay (D-MO), Jared Huffman, (D-CA), Jan Schakowsky, (D-IL), Frank Pallone (D-NJ), David Cicilline (D-RI), Raul Grijalva (D-AZ), Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), and Steven Cohen (D-TN).

“Mouthpieces for Donald Trump”

The Democrats accuse Durham of being a “hand-selected prosecutor” while alleging that he and Barr have “consistently and publicly questioned the legitimacy of the Justice Department, acting as mouthpieces for Donald Trump rather than public servants bound to the rule of law.”

Among their complaints is that while testifying before the Senate Appropriations Committee, Barr said he believed “spying [on then-candidate Donald Trump’s campaign] did occur.”

“This unfounded assertion was not only inappropriate given the ongoing nature of the investigation, but in the wake of the release of the Office of Inspector General (OIG) report, it was a completely inaccurate statement,” the Democrat representatives continued.

They also condemned him for publicly disagreeing with elements of Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s report.

“Your uncorroborated and inappropriate statements on the OIG report legitimize fringe conspiracy theories and erode public trust in the Justice Department’s credibility,” the representatives complained.

Durham worries Democrats

Durham is investigating potential wrongdoing during the Trump-Russia collusion probe. In October, Fox News reported that his inquiry had become “a full-fledged criminal investigation.”

Committee chairmen Adam Schiff and Jerry Nadler weren’t happy about that development, with Fox News quoting them as saying, “These reports, if true, raise profound new concerns that the Department of Justice under Attorney General William Barr has lost its independence and become a vehicle for President Trump’s political revenge.”

It’s not surprising that Democrat attacks on Barr and Durham are ramping up. In his probe into the origins of the Trump-Russia investigation, the famously tight-lipped Durham has broader powers than Horowitz did, and he is reportedly now on the trail of Obama officials like former CIA Director John Brennan.
