Senate Democrats file ethics complaint against Sens. Cruz and Hawley

Several Senate Democrats have now filed an ethics complaint seeking disciplinary measures, up to and including expulsion, against Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Josh Hawley (R-MO) over their objections and alleged roles in the Jan. 6 riot that ensued at the Capitol, The Post Millennial reported.

Cruz and Hawley now stand accused by their colleagues of having aided and abetted the rioters, and of having used the violent incident to fundraise for their campaigns.

Democrats want the senators punished

The charges posed in the ethics complaint against Cruz and Hawley were spelled out in a letter to the Senate Ethics Committee from Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) on behalf of himself and six other Democratic senators, all of whom demand partisan revenge against the pair of Republicans.

The letter claimed that the mere announcement of the intention to object to the disputed election results “amplified claims of election fraud that had resulted in threats of violence against state and local officials around the country.”

Furthermore, by continuing with their objections even after the riot had temporarily delayed the certification process, “Senators Cruz and Hawley lent legitimacy to the mob’s cause and made future violence more likely.”

“The question the Senate must answer is not whether Senators Hawley and Cruz had the right to the object to the electors, but whether the senators failed to ‘[p]ut loyalty to the highest moral principles and to country above loyalty to persons, party, or Government department’ or engaged in ‘improper conduct reflecting on the Senate’ in connection with the violence on January 6,” the Democrats insisted.

“Strong disciplinary action”

The letter proceeded to lay out the “facts” of the matter as the Democratic senators saw them, with each “fact” spun in such a way as to cast Cruz, Hawley, former President Donald Trump, and all of their supporters in the worst possible light.

The Democrats demanded a full and thorough investigation of the matter and provided a list of questions that they want answers to immediately.

“For the foregoing reasons, the Senate Ethics Committee should open an investigation into the actions of Senators Hawley and Cruz, and perhaps others as investigation may reveal, in order to protect the integrity, safety, and reputation of the Senate,” the letter concluded. “The Committee should also offer recommendations for strong disciplinary action, including up to expulsion or censure, if warranted by the facts uncovered.”

Senators respond

In response to the letter from their Democratic colleagues, both Republican senators vehemently denied any wrongdoing or complicity in the violence that occurred, NBC News reported.

Cruz told reporters this week, “Debating a question of constitutional law on the floor of the Senate is the antithesis of trying to resolve conflicts through violent terrorist attack.”

Hawley said in a statement, “Joe Biden and the Democrats talk about unity but are brazenly trying to silence dissent. This latest effort is a flagrant abuse of the Senate ethics process and a flagrant attempt to exact partisan revenge.”
