Report: Dems go on defense ahead of release of new tell-all book

Breitbart News editor-at-large and president of the Government Accountability Institute (GAI) Peter Schweizer has a new book coming out — but though the alleged tell-all won’t hit bookstore shelves for more than a week, Democrats are already trying to discredit it.

According to a Friday report, Schweizer’s Profiles in Corruption: Abuse of Power by America’s Progressive Elite, set to be released on Jan. 21, has already prompted disparaging remarks from leftist elites like President Bill Clinton’s former press secretary, who said Friday that “Schweizer is fixing to lie again.”

Truths and lies

According to Axios, Profiles in Corruption includes chapters on most of the 2020 Democratic presidential frontrunners and even some of the second-tier candidates, including former Vice President Joe Biden and Sens. Kamala Harris (CA), Elizabeth Warren (ME), Bernie Sanders (VT), Cory Booker (NJ), and Amy Klobuchar (MN).

The likes of former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg and former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg may have been left out of the manuscript — but with both still polling in the single-digits, according to RealClearPolitics, it seems they may have some more pressing issues to worry about.

For his part, Schweizer told Axios that his book is “a sweeping, detailed look at how the leading figures of progressivism have leveraged the power of their positions.”

“Progressives are unique on the current political landscape,” Schweizer added, “because unlike moderates, conservatives, and libertarians, they want to rapidly expand government power, thereby creating new opportunities for an even greater abuse of power.”

But Schweizer’s detractors have said he has a rocky history with the truth. Former Clinton Press Secretary Angel Ureña asserted in a tweet Friday that subsequent investigations have disproven allegations made in Schweizer’s previous book, Clinton Cash, about corruption in the Clinton Foundation.

Looking forward

Of course, Ureña left out that U.S. Attorney John Huber’s investigation into the Clinton Foundation was less than comprehensive. According to Breitbart, Huber was described by The Washington Post as more of a “reviewer” than an investigator, and he failed to talk to several key players in the allegations — hardly making for an exoneration.

Furthermore, news stories in the mainstream press, like an April 2015 account in The New York Times, showed that key claims in Clinton Cash were valid, and that the Clinton Foundation’s cash flow largely dried up after Hillary Clinton’s 2016 election loss meant that she would not have influence over policy decisions.

It will be interesting to see if those mentioned in the book bother to defend themselves — and whether the press decides to go after Schweizer or just try to ignore him into irrelevance. No one knows yet what is in the book, but sources have said that it details the siphoning of tens of millions of taxpayer dollars — and that’s just by the Biden family.

Given the success of Schweizer’s previous books and the public interest in recent revelations about Joe and Hunter Biden, it’s unlikely that any attempt by Democrats to ignore the book will be unsuccessful. But only time will tell if accountability is on the horizon.
