DeSantis announces special session to address end to Disney’s self-governance

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced a special session of the state legislature on Tuesday that will address the possibility of ending Disney’s self-governance in Florida.

The effort is part of the state’s work to “remind” Disney it is a guest in the state and follows the governor’s view that all businesses in the state should compete on “a fair playing field.”

“Governor DeSantis’ position is that all businesses in Florida should be able to compete on a fair playing field, without company-specific carve-outs or special favors from government,” press secretary Christina Pushaw told The Daily Wire on Tuesday, regarding the governor’s proclamation.

“Today we remind them”

“The Florida legislature is meeting this week to consider the congressional reapportionment plan for Florida for the next 10 years, and that is what they have been called upon to do,” DeSantis said Tuesday at a press conference, “but I am announcing today that we are expanding the call of what they are going to be considering this week.”

“And so yes, they will be considering the congressional map, but they also will be considering termination of all special districts that were enacted in Florida prior to 1968, and that includes the Reedy Creek Improvement District,” he said.

Revenge?

Mainstream media has noted the announcement comes shortly after Disney’s pushback regarding Florida’s Parental Rights in Education bill which has been falsely called the “Don’t Say Gay” bill by the left.

Disney’s leadership even announced plans to start a committee to include even more LGBTQ+ representation in its films following complaints that the company did not do enough to stop the Florida bill.

In response, the new bill could terminate Disney’s special rights in the state.

The new announcement has a strong chance of passing in the GOP-led legislature, meaning Disney’s ability to operate beyond the law of other state businesses may end soon.
