Fox News reports that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has just announced that he has chosen Palm Beach Country Circuit Judge Renatha Francis to be the next member of the state’s Supreme Court.
The opportunity was presented to DeSantis by the retirement of Florida Supreme Court Justice Al Lawson.
DeSantis’s appointment of Francis to Florida’s high court is one of those decisions that is just going to eat away at the political left. That’s because it completely goes against their narrative.
Francis immigrated to the U.S. in 2004, coming from Jamaica. She would go on to graduate from Florida Coastal Law School in 2010.
“Judge Renatha Francis has an incredible life story that epitomizes the American dream and proves that those who come to our country have the opportunity to pursue their dreams and, through hard work and the application of their God-given talents, reach the highest heights of whatever field they choose,” DeSantis said on Friday.
DeSantis emphasized several things about Francis’s background, including that it has not all been centered around Law. DeSantis argued that it is a “good thing to take someone that came from different backgrounds rather than someone that was born into a legal family.”
DeSantis also argued that there is an important benefit to appointing someone like Francis who knows what life is like outside of the United States. DeSantis said:
I think sometimes people that are born here take it for granted because they don’t have any point of reference to be able to compare a free society in America versus different parts of the world. That’s why you see some of the people that have been, you know, really, really strong in the state of Florida for upholding individual freedom and the rule of law.
DeSantis believes that Francis falls into this category.
Francis put out a statement of her own following DeSantis’s announcement.
“I’m incredibly honored and humbled by this appointment to continue my service to the people of our great state of Florida,” she said. “I know I’ve said this before on prior occasions, but I have to say it again — I stand before you as the epitome of the American Dream.”
I’m humbled that I get to be a part of this great American experiment, and to serve at the highest level of our state judiciary. The Florida Supreme Court protects the people’s liberty, and inherent in the way that we do that as a judiciary is by respecting and observing the limited role that our judges play in our Constitutional system of government.
It sounds as though DeSantis has made another good choice for the people of Florida.
