DeSantis comes out ahead of Trump in Wisconsin straw poll

For the first time in any polling, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) came out ahead of former President Donald Trump in the Wisconsin straw poll.

DeSantis had 38% support in the poll, while Trump had 32%. A number of other candidates had under 10% including Nikki Haley with 7%, and Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rand Paul (R-KY), and former Vice President Mike Pence with 2.5% each.

Straw polls are not as scientific as other types of polling, but this one may show that a DeSantis candidacy is gathering steam while Trump’s popularity may be waning slightly.

A plurality of 43% said they wanted Trump to run again in 2024, while 31% said no and 22% weren’t sure.

DeSantis gaining

A Texas polling outfit, CWS Research, showed that while DeSantis was still second to Trump by double digits there, he had gained eight points since April.

In that poll, Trump had 45%, while DeSantis had 28%.

Movement definitely seems to be away from Trump and toward DeSantis, but this in the primary and not the general election.

People want the strongest candidate to represent their party, but it is hard to tell which one that would be.

Trump drawbacks

While Trump has experience as president, he also has his drawbacks: he doesn’t know when to stop tweeting (or other social media posting), he churns through staff because he’s difficult to deal with, and he draws relentless attacks from opponents that pose a distraction from his presidential duties.

He also hasn’t seen the end of the Jan. 6 committee, which could further damage him or even lead to possible criminal charges, as ridiculous as that would be. In short, Trump may be too damaged to be electable or to be followed by a majority of Americans if he is somehow elected.

DeSantis has a cleaner record, but he also hasn’t faced the kind of relentless attacks that have made Trump tough enough to keep going.

It’s a difficult decision, but one that only voters can make as time marches on to 2024.
