The Walt Disney Co. recently bowed to pressure from the “woke” leftist mob and publicly joined the misinformed opposition to Florida’s Parental Rights in Education legislation that prohibits schools and teachers from classroom discussion of things like sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity for pre-kindergarten through third-grade students.
In response, some Florida Republicans, led by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), are seriously discussing stripping Disney of special self-governing privileges the company was granted many decades ago, the Washington Examiner reported.
The governor has warned that Disney’s embrace and promotion of “woke” leftist ideology poses a threat to the people of Florida and the nation more broadly and renders the company undeserving of the special privileges it has received.
Time to revoke special privileges for Disney
The New York Post reported that Gov. DeSantis addressed the issue during a Thursday event and raised the prospect of legislatively revoking the special self-governing status awarded to Disney in 1967 as part of the Reedy Creek Improvement District.
That special status allows Disney to oversee its construction and zoning, manage its police force and emergency services, levy its taxes for infrastructure projects, and even build its own nuclear power plant, if it so desired, among other things.
“Disney has alienated a lot of people now,” DeSantis said Thursday. “And so the political influence they’re used to wielding, I think has dissipated. And so the question is, why would you want to have special privileges in the law at all? And I don’t think that we should.”
Imposition of “woke ideology” a “significant threat” to state and nation
Gov. DeSantis revisited the idea Friday during an appearance on Fox News in which he referenced the “incredible treatment” legislatively afforded to Disney but no other corporations and said, “That’s not something I’ve ever supported.”
“Look, there’s policy disputes, and that’s fine,” the governor continued, “but when you’re trying to impose a woke ideology on our state, we view that as a significant threat.”
“This wokeness will destroy this country if we let it run unabated,” DeSantis said. “So in Florida, we take a very big stand against that and I think the legislature is going to look at that.”
Self-governing privileges would revert to county, state
The Post noted that if the Florida legislature were to repeal the law extending semi-autonomous self-governing rights to Disney than all of the special privileges granted to the corporation would revert to the counties in which it is physically located, which would be Orange and Osceola counties.
Nor is Gov. DeSantis going out on a limb here in advance of the legislature, as GOP state Rep. Spencer Roach revealed Wednesday that such a discussion was indeed ongoing among state lawmakers in Tallahassee.
“Yesterday was the 2nd meeting in a week w/fellow legislators to discuss a repeal of the 1967 Reedy Creek Improvement Act, which allows Disney to act as its own government,” Roach tweeted. “If Disney wants to embrace woke ideology, it seems fitting that they should be regulated by Orange County.”
