In a surprise move, high-profile California Republican Rep. Devin Nunes announced this week that he will resign from the House of Representatives by year’s end.
Fox News reported on Monday that Nunes is stepping down in order to become CEO of former President Donald Trump’s new social media company, under the newly-formed Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG). Nunes described the opportunity as one that he “couldn’t refuse.”
Trump heaps praise
“Trump Media & Technology Group today announced that Congressman Devin G. Nunes has been selected to join the Company as Chief Executive Officer,” a statement from TMTG read.
“Mr. Nunes will be leaving the U.S. House of Representatives and will begin his new role as Chief Executive Officer of TMTG in January 2022,” it added.
Trump, who serves as chairman of TMTG, was quoted in the statement, saying, “Congressman Devin Nunes is a fighter and a leader. He will make an excellent CEO of TMTG.”
The former president added: “Devin understands that we must stop the liberal media and Big Tech from destroying the freedoms that make America great.”
Nunes was considered a close ally of Trump during his time in office, even being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom before Trump left the White House.
According to Fox News, the medal was given in recognition of Nunes’ efforts to expose misconduct committed during the Trump-Russia collusion probe.
“Devin’s efforts led to the firing, demotion, or resignation of over a dozen FBI and DOJ employees,” a White House statement declared at the time.
“He also forced the disclosure of documents that proved that a corrupt senior FBI official pursued a vindictive persecution of General Michael Flynn — even after rank and file FBI agents found no evidence of wrongdoing.”
MarketWatch reported that the value of shares in Digital World Acquisition Corp. (DWAC), a company linked to TMTG, rose by over 16% on Tuesday after it was revealed that Nunes will take the helm as the outfit’s CEO.
Trump’s new social media platform, TRUTH Social, is expected to be a major disruptor in the otherwise liberal-dominated Big Tech social media sector. It is expected to launch sometime in 2022.
