John Durham, the special prosecutor tasked with investigating the origins of the infamous Trump–Russia collusion probe, recently handed down an indictment against an attorney with ties to the Clinton campaign for allegedly lying to the FBI.
Now, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, is warning that the lawyer could ultimately be the “fall guy” for Clinton, the Washington Examiner reports, as she seeks to skirt accountability for her own role in what former President Donald Trump has long called a “hoax.”
The congressman’s comments came Thursday during an appearance on Newsmax, where he discussed the indictment of attorney Michael Sussmann for his alleged role in creating and perpetuating a false narrative about a connection between the 2016 Trump campaign team and the Russia-based Alfa Bank.
The Sussmann indictment
According to the 27-page indictment, Sussman was a lawyer with Perkins Coie — a Democrat-linked firm that was also representing the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee (DNC), along with an unnamed Big Tech executive — at the time of the alleged crime.
Durham’s team has reportedly presented to prosecutors a wealth of evidence detailing how Sussmann and others concocted lies about former President Trump and disseminated them to the media and federal authorities.
In doing so, however, Sussmann lied to the FBI, asserting that he was not working on behalf of any clients — such as the Clinton campaign or DNC — and was instead passing along the information as nothing more than a concerned “good citizen.”
The claims against Trump were later debunked by a months-long investigation.
“The fall guy”
Speaking Thursday, Rep. Nunes told Newsmax host Greg Kelly that the Sussmann indictment is “serious” and claimed that the attorney had clearly been doing the “dirty work” of the Clinton campaign.
Still, Nunes celebrated the charges, saying he hopes “this is only the first of several other indictments.”
“There was a conspiracy here,” Nunes said, according to Examiner. “You’ve heard me talk about this for many, many years. The Clinton campaign conspired with really bad agents and bad actors within the FBI and other locations,” he charged.
“So, this guy you’ve got lying to the FBI. We know people conspired to do this. Conspiracy is a major charge, and it can be very, very broad,” the Republican added. “That’s what I would like to see — was this the only guy that did it? Is he going to be the fall guy for the Clinton campaign? We’ve seen that in history, remember? We’ve seen people in history be the fall guy for the Clintons.” Take a look at his full interview for yourself:
