DHS reveals plan to expand ‘catch and release’ border policy once Title 42 is ended

A hallmark of President Joe Biden’s lax enforcement policies regarding border security and immigration laws has been a return of “catch and release,” in which migrants apprehended at the southwest border are simply processed and permitted to continue their unlawful journey into the United States.

Now, in advance of the anticipated end of the Title 42 public health order that allowed for the immediate expulsion of migrants at the border, Biden’s Department of Homeland Security has revealed its intention to dramatically accelerate and expand the “catch and release” policy, Breitbart reported.

A central component of that plan is an increased reliance on — and taxpayer funding for — federally contracted non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to provide transportation for so-called “irregular migrants” away from the border and into various communities in the interior of the country.

“A mere checkpoint for border crossers”

That revelation came via an internal memo from DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas dated April 26 titled “DHS Plan for Southwest Border Security and Preparedness,” which was obtained and published by Breitbart and contains an outline and details of six “pillars” of border security intended to bolster an already admittedly strained system.

This new plan comes amid an expected substantial surge of migrants at the southwest border once Title 42 is lifted on May 23 — though that date could be delayed by federal courts — and includes a preemptive counter-surge of DHS personnel and resources to the border as well as changes to processing procedures designed to improve efficiency.

Part and parcel of that are expanding collaboration and coordination with taxpayer-funded NGOs to provide transportation by buses and planes, lodging in hotels, and other services to migrants once they have been processed and released — rather than detained and expelled — from DHS custody.

In other words, barring supposed exceptions for known criminal felons and overt national security threats, the new DHS plan was described by Breitbart as a continuation and expansion of the “administration’s transformation of the United States-Mexico border into a mere checkpoint for border crossers.”

Plan will welcome in millions of migrants per year

This plan actually isn’t entirely new, as it had previously been alluded to in a lengthy 115-page internal draft copy obtained and published by Breitbart in February titled “Southwest Border Mass Irregular Migration Contingency Plan,” which, in part, detailed the “broadscale release mechanisms” that would be implemented to accommodate anticipated surges in the number of migrants attempting to enter the country illegally.

Bear in mind that these plans to broaden and expand the “catch and release” policy come as even the Biden administration itself has acknowledged that as many as half a million migrants could arrive at the border every single month once Title 42 is no longer in place.

That could mean upwards of 6 million migrants caught and released into the country in just one year. Now compare that to a separate report earlier this month about a legal brief that cited DHS’s own numbers in showing that roughly 756,000 migrants had been caught and released during Biden’s first year in office, from the end of January 2021 to the end of February 2022 — not counting the estimated 500,000 who evaded capture while entering the country or the unaccompanied children processed and released.

An open borders policy

President Biden and his comrades have consistently sought to weaken and dismantle the nation’s border security apparatus — all the while blaming the prior administration for the current worsening results of its own actions — as part of an increasingly obvious effort to impose an open borders policy on an unwilling nation.

This is flatly unacceptable, and barring intervention from the federal courts or Congress, this plan from the Biden administration will have devastating impacts on citizens and communities across the country.
