Actor Jack Hedley, known for role in James Bond film, dies at age 92

Jack Hedley, a prolific English actor known for roles in Lawrence of Arabia and the James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only, has died. He was 92.

Hedley died on Dec. 11 after a “short illness bravely borne,” according to a report from Deadline.

A star in Britain and America

In For Your Eyes Only, Hedley appeared alongside Roger Moore in the role of Sir Timothy Havelock, a marine archaeologist who meets a grim fate while tracking down a shipwreck for the British Secret Service and the father of the crossbow-wielding Bond girl, Variety reports. He also voiced Havelock’s parrot.

While Havelock was arguably his most famous role, Hedley appeared in 100 different parts over the course of his 50-year career and was well-known to British TV audiences, also appearing in the theatre, as Variety noted.

In the early 60s, he starred in the BBC series The World of Tim Frazer, and appeared in an uncredited role in the David Lean epic Lawrence of Arabia as a reporter at Lawrence’s funeral.

Over the course of the decade, he was also seen in movies like The Scarlet Blade, Witchcraft, The Secret of Blood Island, and the American war epic The Longest Day, as well as In the French Style and Of Human Bondage.

Hedley was born in London in 1929, according to Deadline. He launched his career with movie roles in the 1950s after changing his last name, which was originally Hawkins, to avoid confusion with another well-known actor, Variety reported.

A prolific actor

According to Deadline, Hedley’s other roles include parts in the TV shows Colditz, Dixon of Dock Green, The Buccaneers, Only Fools and Horses, and the TV film version of another Lean classic, Brief Encounter, as well as ‘Allo ‘Allo, Dalziel and Pascoe, and Space Precinct.

Additional movie roles include the Italian horror film The New York Ripper, in which he starred as a police detective, Variety reported.

His last role was as a priest in the Italian limited series St. Paul.

There will be no funeral, at Hedley’s request, according to a note that confirmed his death in The Times of London.

“[Hedley] died on 11th December 2021, aged 92, after a short illness bravely borne. At his request there will be no funeral. He will be much missed by his family and friends,” the note read, as Variety reported.
