In a move that many found unnerving, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced last week that the Biden administration is creating a “Disinformation Governance Board,” which will be headed by Nina Jankowicz.
Yet while Jankowicz now says it is crucial for the government to fight the spread of falsehoods, Breitbart noted that she was singing a different tune two years ago.
Jankowicz once agreed that the government should not regulate misinformation
In a piece published this past Sunday, Breitbart contributor Joel B. Pollak pointed out that Jankowicz told the House Intelligence Committee in 2020 that there was no federal role in fighting online disinformation.
“I do not think government should be in that business,” Pollak quoted Jankowicz as telling Rep. Jim Himes, a Democrat from Connecticut.
Her remarks came in response to concerns voiced by Himes over the danger that a government-mandated truth board might pose.
“We start going down that path, and we are not just ‘breaking democracy,’ we are breaking classical, enlightened liberalism,” the congressman explained.
He went on to reference his history of having been raised in authoritarian Latin American countries, saying the experience had left him “violently allergic” to suggestions that government bureaucrats should be in the business of regulating speech.
The lawmaker also voiced skepticism over the idea that misinformation actually poses a substantial threat in the United States.
“I actually want to see the evidence that people are seeing this information, and are in a meaningful way, in a material way, dismantling our democracy through violence or through political organizations,” Himes stated.
Jankowicz warned of “draconian fake news laws” in Russia
Jankowicz was quick to express agreement with Himes, saying, “I totally understand your aversion to the idea that government would fight back against disinformation, in fact — the use of that term has been basically the foundation to some very draconian fake news laws in places like Russia, or even Singapore.”
However, Jankowicz is now set to preside over the sort of government body that she previously saw no need for. Further, putting her in charge of opposing disinformation is all the more ironic given her own history of sharing it.
Fox News reported on Friday that Jankowic put out a series of tweets that portrayed reports on Hunter Biden’s laptop as being a Russian hoax. However, mainstream media such as The New York Times have since vouched for its authenticity.
