Those who haven’t had the opportunity to witness firsthand the crisis currently unfolding at the U.S.–Mexico border can now see for themselves the severity of the situation.
On Friday, the Washington Examiner published a series of leaked photos from makeshift federal detention facilities in western Arizona that the outlet described as “disturbing.”
The outlet’s report begins: “Disturbing photos obtained by the Washington Examiner show the misery wrought by a massive surge in illegal migration in western Arizona: thousands of people stranded in overcrowded makeshift facilities amid soaring COVID-19 infection rates and no sign things will get better anytime soon.”
The report adds: “Four people familiar with the dire situation, and the Biden administration’s botched response, said the photos underscore the danger the migrants, border officials, and the remote community of Yuma are living under amid the crisis.”
By the numbers
Yuma is among the cities in Arizona that have been most affected by surges in illegal immigration seen under President Joe Biden’s administration. Reports indicate that border officials apprehended upwards of 65,000 migrants between September and November 2021 in Yuma alone.
Last month, 6,000 migrants were apprehended there over a span of just five days, leading the city’s mayor to declare a state of emergency — and making clear that the holiday season didn’t put a damper on new migration to the U.S.
According to the Examiner, authorities detained a group of 1,500 people crossing into Yuma just last week.
“A drop in the bucket”
According to the Examiner, U.S. Border Patrol maintains “three holding stations throughout the Yuma region,” and all are currently filled. Also at maximum capacity is an outdoor tent that the Examiner said “has been brimming with occupants for months.”
The photos published by the outlet show migrants sleeping “side by side” in one facility, apparently without room to even outstretch their arms, despite ongoing concerns about the spread of COVID-19.
And this is just the beginning.
“It’s not even a drop in the bucket,” one source told the Examiner.
On the campaign trail, Biden had big plans for reform at the border. This latest report only adds to the evidence that he’s failing miserably at seeing them through.
