Long-standing concerns about former Vice President Joe Biden’s fitness for office may have some merit, according to former President Barack Obama’s former doctor.
Joe Biden released his medical records this week, and the results show that he’s “not a healthy guy,” Dr. David Scheiner told the Washington Examiner. That’s quite a different assessment from Biden’s campaign doctor, who said the candidate is a “healthy, vigorous 77-year-old.”
“He’s not in bad shape for his age, but I wouldn’t say he’s in outstanding health. Could I guarantee he won’t have issues for the next four years? He has a lot of issues that are just sort of sitting there,” Scheiner said.
Obama doc: Biden “has a lot of issues”
Biden released his medical records for the first time in over a decade this week, after previously promising to clear up any doubts before the Iowa primaries, The Hill reported. Although he has shot down speculation that he is unhealthy, his campaign has been dogged by questions about his fitness for office before it even began.
The candidate’s often confused speeches have raised questions about his mental sharpness, and an incident when his eye filled with blood during a town hall event underscored the conjecture. After looking over Biden’s records, Dr. Scheiner said that there are definitely causes for concern, according to Fox News.
The records that Biden’s doctor released show that he has atrial fibrillation, also known as an irregular heartbeat, acid reflux, hyperlipidemia, and seasonal allergies. The report also mentions Biden’s health history of two aneurysms that threatened his life in 1988.
Scheiner said that he was concerned about the possibility of future strokes and would like to see an MRI. The report doesn’t mention any MRI scans, but it does note a CT angiogram in 2014 that showed no recurring disease.
Biden appears to have a high estimation of his personal fitness. The candidate angrily challenged an Iowa voter to a push-up contest and IQ exam after the man asked Biden about his son’s business in Ukraine, in a recent viral incident — and his doctor affirmed Biden’s “vigor” as well in the letter.
“Vice President Biden is a healthy, vigorous 77-year-old male, who is fit to successfully execute the duties of the presidency, to include those as chief executive, head of state and commander in chief,” Dr. Kevin O’Connor said.
Biden demurs on second term
Despite constant verbal “gaffes” and questions about his dealings with Ukraine, Biden is still solidly the Democratic frontrunner. He appeared along with six other candidates on the debate stage Thursday night, where he ducked a question about seeking a second presidential term — he only said: “Let’s see what happens.”
Biden caused some confusion when he imitated a child with a stutter, prompting a jibe from former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. She later apologized when Biden explained that he struggled with a stutter growing up, according to The Guardian.
President Donald Trump has routinely mocked “Sleepy Joe” and suggested that he isn’t “playing with a full deck” — and according to Obama’s former doc, he may be right.
