Barr’s DOJ steps in amid reports of mishandled ballots in Pennsylvania county

Attorney General Bill Barr’s Department of Justice (DOJ) is taking the reins in an investigation into allegations that a small number of ballots were mishandled by Pennsylvania’s Luzerne County.

According to Fox News, reports first revealed earlier this week that “multiple military ballots were found discarded” in the county. The Justice Department was able to recover nine of them, Fox reported, and now, they’re taking steps to ensure “every properly cast ballot is counted.”

DOJ on the case

According to Fox, U.S. Attorney David Freed of the Middle District of Pennsylvania sent a letter Thursday to the Luzerne County Bureau of Elections. In it, Freed provided a brief synopsis of the “initial findings” by investigators looking into the mishandled ballots and urged local officials to make corrective changes to their procedures immediately.

“The FBI has recovered a number of documents relating to military ballots that had been improperly opened by your elections staff, and had the ballots removed and discarded, or removed and placed separately from the envelope containing confidential voter information and attestation,” Freed wrote in his letter.

Freed indicated that seven of the nine ballots recovered by investigators were cast for President Donald Trump in what is surely just a coincidence.

“In addition to the military ballots and envelopes that were discarded and recovered as detailed above,” Freed wrote, “investigators recovered four (4) apparently official, bar-coded, absentee ballot envelopes that were empty”

According to Freed, the “majority of the recovered materials were found in an outside dumpster.”

“Troubling” discoveries

Freed also said interviews conducted by DOJ officials “revealed that this issue was a problem in the primary election — therefore a known issue — and that the problem has not been corrected.”

Among others, it’s a discovery that Freed called “troubling,” according to Fox.

“The preliminary findings of this inquiry are troubling and the Luzerne County Bureau of Elections must comply with all applicable state and federal election laws and guidance to ensure that all votes — regardless of party — are counted to ensure an accurate election count,” he wrote Thursday.

Sadly, Freed said, even though officials in Luzerne County have “made some attempts to reconstitute certain of the improperly opened ballots, there is no guarantee that any of these votes will be counted in the general election.”

Isn’t this exactly what President Trump warned us about?
