Donald Trump publishes first official post on his Truth Social platform

Former President Donald Trump has made his social media return after being de-platformed by Twitter last year following the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol protest.

Breitbart News reports that Trump posted his first “Truth,” or post, on his new social media site Truth Social on Thursday.

“I’M BACK #COVFEFE,” Trump wrote. He also included in the post a photograph of himself using his phone while standing in front of his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.

The hashtag is a reference to a spelling mistake that he made in a Twitter message during his presidency. “Despite the constant negative press covfefe,” Trump wrote on May 31, 2017. Not long thereafter, he asked his followers whether they “can figure out the true meaning of ‘covfefe.'”

Truth #2

Trump followed his first post on Truth Social with another one that read “Get Ready! Your favorite President will see you soon!”

Trump’s posts come after Elon Musk’s recent acquisition of Twitter. Musk has made it clear that one of the purposes of the acquisition was to return free speech to the platform. This, in many ways, is the same goal as Truth social, which was developed by Trump in response to Big Tech’s censorship of not only Trump but other conservatives.

With Musk in control, the question that was raised was whether Trump would return to Twitter. Trump, though, immediately made it clear that he will not, saying, “I am not going on Twitter, I am going to stay on TRUTH.”

Trump also said that he planned to start posting on Truth Social, and he followed through on that promise on Thursday.

New competition

Now, Musk’s Twitter and Trump’s Truth Social are in competition. So far, Truth Social is doing all right.

Musk, himself, put out a tweet this week noting that “Truth Social is currently beating Twitter & TikTok on the Apple Store.” This comes after Trump opened the app up to all iPhone users for the first time.

Musk also released another two Tweets about Truth Social. In one, he wrote, “Truth Social (terrible name) exists because Twitter censored free speech.” In the other, he added, “should be called Trumpet instead!”

It remains to be seen whether Truth Social can really compete with Twitter. Truth Social’s stock dropped during Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, and it’s not yet available for Android users.
