President Trump has finally made his endorsement in the Republican party’s critical Senate primary in Ohio, and his choice is sure to leave many stunned.
The 45th president issued a statement touting J.D. Vance, a former critic of his, as the best choice to lead Republicans to victory.
Trump endorses J.D. Vance
Trump acknowledged that Vance has “said some not so great things about me in the past,” but Trump said he trusts that Vance “gets it” now and has evolved since his former days as a Never Trumper.
Conservatives can trust that Vance will put “America First” if elected to the Senate, Trump said, praising Vance as a strong advocate of border security, law and order, election integrity, Big Tech regulation, and fair trade with China.
“It is time for the entire MAGA movement, the greatest in the history of our Country, to unite behind J.D.’s campaign because, unlike so many other pretenders and wannabees, he will put America First.”
Vance’s rivals had lobbied Trump to reconsider the rumored endorsement by casting doubt on Vance’s viability and authenticity, pointing to the Hillbilly Elegy author’s past criticism of Trump in 2016. At the time, Vance condemned Trump as a racist demagogue.
But Vance has since undergone a remarkable transformation, adopting a provocative, Trumpian style and embracing Trump’s “America First” policies, such as immigration restriction and staying out of foreign wars.

“We cannot play games”
Trump said he has watched the crowded primary, which falls on May 3, carefully and that he is impressed by Vance’s “brains and brawn.” Vance will “destroy” the presumptive Democratic candidate, Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Oh.), and represent Trump voters faithfully in Washington, Trump said.
“We cannot play games. It is all about winning!” Trump said.
Vance said he was “incredibly honored” for the endorsement.
I’m incredibly honored to have President Trump’s support. He was an incredible fighter for hard working Americans in the White House, he will be again, and I’ll fight for the America First Agenda in the Senate. https://t.co/s3d3JhTgBC

Trump’s endorsement has significant weight in Ohio, a state that Trump won handily in 2016 and 2020. It appears almost certain that Trump will use a previously announced MAGA rally in the state on April 23 to give Vance a last-minute boost before the primary.
