Reports: More than 2 dozen arrested in Portland as riots continue

Police in Portland, Oregon didn’t take any chances Sunday night as a large group of protesters gathered outside a police precinct.

Mass arrests were made on the eve of Columbus Day as police intervened to stop a “direct action” event from happening, Breitbart reported.

Mass arrests in Portland

Portland has been the site of continuous violence since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis sparked nationwide unrest in May.

On Sunday night, Portland police arrested 26 people, KATU reported, out of a group of about 75 who had gathered in Alberta Park before marching to a police precinct that “has been targeted numerous times over the past 130-plus nights by violent protests,” according to Portland police.

The protesters were given a warning to get out of the street before police moved in and made the arrests, KATU reported. The protest was over in minutes, according to one journalist. Most were charged with interfering with a police officer and disorderly conduct.

According to Breitbart, police said that the protesters “wore armor, helmets, masks, and/or carried shields and umbrellas,” suggesting a “direct action” riot was in the works.

“The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) had information that the gathering was a planned ‘direct action’ event. The crowd’s posture, including their armored attire, strongly suggested that this was planned to be another such event,” police said, as Breitbart reported. They went on:

PPB was also concerned about the safety of the protesters, who were clad in black and difficult to see, on a major thoroughfare that was open to vehicular traffic. Due to these concerns, and the fact there were resources in place to make arrests, action was taken earlier in this event than ones before.

Fresh riots in Oregon

While that crowd was dispersed, a similar group took out their anger on business owners, statues, and a museum in a “day of rage” on the eve of Columbus Day.

Fresh riots were declared Sunday evening when a group of about 300 vandals tore down statues of Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt, according to KATU. The anarchists also smashed windows and one rioter fired a gun into a restaurant window as Portland marked 123 straight days of chaos, Breitbart reported. One of the buildings targeted was the Oregon Historical Society.

Police made three arrests over the mayhem.

For his part, President Donald Trump, who has aggressively called for a crackdown on the intractable lawlessness in Portland, slammed Democrats over the latest chaos in a tweet Monday morning.
