Alaska Gov. Dunleavy accepts Trump’s terms for re-election endorsement

Former President Donald Trump is focusing his attention on Alaska.

This week, he offered his endorsement to Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy — but it came with a caveat.

“Now more than ever”

According to Breitbart, in order to secure the former president’s re-election endorsement, the governor had to agree not to publicly support the campaign of Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK).

The senator, whom Trump has begun calling “the disaster from Alaska,” is among the members of his own party he hopes to see defeated in upcoming races.

While the former president issued a statement indicating that the state “needs Mike Dunleavy as Governor now more than ever,” he hinged his endorsement on the governor’s “non-endorsement” of Murkowski.

“In other words, if Mike endorses her, which is his prerogative, my endorsement of him is null and void, and of no further force or effect,” Trump explained.

As for the potential impact of Trump’s endorsement in midterm elections nationwide, that remains to be seen. He is clearly a powerful force within the GOP, however, with polls consistently placing him atop lists of possible 2024 White House hopefuls.

“He has nothing to worry about”

For his part, Dunleavy is clearly pleased to have received the nod.

“Please tell the President thank you for the endorsement,” the governor wrote in a letter subsequently released by Trump, according to Breitbart. “With regard to the other issue, please tell the President he has nothing to worry about. I appreciate all 45 has done for Alaska and this country.”

Trump used the opportunity to tout the incumbent governor’s qualifications while continuing his attack on Murkowski. It appears that the latest development represents another ally in Trump’s blatant effort to see the senator unseated.

He has endorsed her primary challenger, Alaska Department of Administration Commissioner Kelly Tshibaka, who is also backed by the state’s Republican Party. Trump announced that endorsement in June, declaring that the incumbent candidate must go.

“Kelly Tshibaka is the candidate who can beat Murkowski — and she will,” he said, according to Fox News. “Kelly is a fighter who stands for Alaska values and America First. She is MAGA all the way, pro-energy, strong on the Border, tough on Crime and totally supports our Military and our great Vets.”
