Report: Durham may be scrapping his investigation into origins of Russia collusion probe

Allies of President Donald Trump have been anxious for U.S. attorney John Durham to finish his “investigation of the investigators” who first launched the infamous Trump–Russia collusion investigation, but the probe may have gone kaput.

With the possibility of a Biden administration in the offing, Sean Davis, editor of The Federalistreported that sources believe Durham is scrapping his closely watched probe of the Russia hoax.

Probe could be over

According to Davis, a source said, “Durham isn’t doing anything. Dropping his investigations. He’s worried about blowback from Biden. What an absolute disgrace.”

The report comes in the midst of rising frustration from many in Trump’s base over perceived inaction from Durham and Attorney General William Barr.

Since launching a probe of the Trump–Russia investigation that shadowed a good part of Trump’s presidency, both men have been attacked by Democrats as lackeys on a political mission from the president. Outside of intermittent updates, little has been known about Durham’s probe, but many have hoped it would result in criminal punishments for the members of an alleged coup against Trump, including former FBI Director James Comey, former CIA Director John Brennan, and perhaps even former President Barack Obama himself.

As legal analyst Jonathan Turley pointed out in a recent column, Biden has plenty of reasons to make the probe disappear.

Despite his personal disavowals, Biden is alleged to have been involved in Obama’s investigation of Trump’s former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who became a martyr to Trump’s base through a lengthy legal ordeal, Turley wrote:

Earlier this year, disclosures contradicted Biden’s denials that he knew of or was involved in the investigation of figures like Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn; the disclosures indicated Biden may have sought to “unmask” Flynn in surveillance reports.

There also are accounts from the Oval Office that Biden was briefed on the Flynn investigation, including the fact that the FBI thought his discussions with Russian diplomats were “legit.” Earlier, FBI investigators sought to end the Flynn investigation for lack of evidence of any crime; according to one report, Biden raised the possibility of prosecuting Flynn under the Logan Act, a federal law widely viewed as unconstitutional.

Corruption to be buried?

Before the election, Democrats complained loudly that Durham might interfere, as Trump and his allies called on Durham to finish up his work, fearing the likelihood that Biden would bury it if he won the presidency.

But Nov. 3 came and went without a report, and with news outlets having declared Biden the president-elect, time is running out for Durham’s team.

Prosecutors are also under pressure to probe the Biden family’s controversial business dealings, which made a splash in the final weeks before the election.

As Turley noted, a number of Democrats such as Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) have already signaled their desire to shut down any effort to uncover corruption involving Biden and Obama, and the media that buried the Hunter Biden scandal, and spent so many years pumping up Russian collusion, will have a shared incentive to save face as well.

“The FBI reportedly subpoenaed the laptop as part of a money-laundering investigation that included Hunter Biden in 2019. If true, that investigation could directly implicate the president-elect,” Turley wrote.
