Columnist highlights activists’ efforts to change the narrative on transgender athletes

The phenomenon of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports has become a source of controversy over the last several years as something even some on the left oppose.

It’s a problem transgender activists are well aware of — and as Breitbart writer Neil Munro noted in a piece this week, it is leading them to change their tactics.

In his article, Munro cites a “Messaging Guide” put out by the California-based Transgender Law Center.

“Right now, our opposition wins the debate on trans youth in sports against any and all arguments we have tried for our side,” the memo states.

“Opposition rhetoric”

“First, people primarily understand sports through the individualistic lens of competition, where if one person wins then another, by definition, loses,” the guide explains. “Entrenched in this zero sum framework, people resist and dismiss our calls for sports policies that benefit our collective good, the core of a Race Class Gender Narrative.”

The guide goes on to suggest that “opposition rhetoric on sports is more directly transphobic and dehumanizing than their discourse on other issues.”

It claims that when it comes to bathrooms, opponents can “claim some degree of sympathy for transgender people and win over persuadables with coded language, ‘slippery slope’ arguments, and dog whistles about bad actors pretending to be trans in order to ‘take advantage’ of nondiscrimination policies.”

However, the guide acknowledges that “[t]here is far less buffer in their attacks around sports, where they use the physicality of the issue to directly spout dehumanizing stereotypes about transgender women and girls.”

“A convincing story”

Therefore, rather than address the issue outright, the guide advises advocates to sidestep the “physicality” of sports and instead try to smear opponents as bigots.

This involves telling “a convincing story of how our opposition uses strategic racism and transphobia to harm us all; and how, by coming together, we can ensure we all have the freedom to be ourselves and support one another.”

Smear tactics were certainly used on a Loudoun County, Virginia father this past spring when he attempted to bring up the fact that his daughter had been sexually assaulted in a school bathroom by a student who claimed to be transgender.

As The Daily Wire laid out in a blockbuster exposé, Scott Smith was accused of lying about the incident at a June school board meeting and subsequently arrested.
