Elon Musk is paying travel costs of employees seeking out-of-state abortions: Report

A new report from Breitbart News reveals that Elon Musk’s company, Tesla, is covering the travel costs of employees who, following Texas’s new anti-abortion legislation, have had to leave the state in order to get an abortion.

It appears that Musk isn’t quite the conservative that many have been making him out to be following his recent acquisition of Twitter in the name of free speech.

“Safety Net”

This information comes from Tesla’s recently-released “Impact Report.”

At one point the report states that, “since 2021,” the company has added, “an expanded Safety Net program and health insurance offering that includes travel and lodging support for those who may need to seek healthcare services that are unavailable in their home state.”

Although the report doesn’t explicitly state that this will allow employees to get an abortion elsewhere, the dots virtually connect themselves.

Tesla is now located in Texas, and Texas residents who want to have an abortion after the six-week mark of the pregnancy now have to look to other states following Texas’s recently-enacted Heartbeat Act, which bans abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected.

Tesla is far from the only company doing this. Amazon, for example, is doing the same, offering up to $4,000 in travel expenses for out-of-state medical treatment, including abortions.

Surprised?

For some, the news that Musk is indirectly facilitating abortions will come as a surprise, whereas for others it won’t.

Musk has been given off conservative vibes recently ever since his Twitter acquisition with his free speech push. But, the truth of the matter is that Musk is probably more of a libertarian than a conservative. And, it isn’t so much that Musk is facilitating abortions as he is facilitating one’s right to live his or her life free from government interference.

In September 2021, for example, Musk put out this tweet: “In general, I believe government should rarely impose its will upon the people, and, when doing so, should aspire to maximize their cumulative happiness. That said, I would prefer to stay out of politics.”

A libertarian could argue that Texas is crossing the line here by placing such restrictions on abortion.

It’s a complicated issue that can be looked at from all kinds of moral and legal viewpoints. But, this appears to be Musk’s take on it.
