Elon Musk ‘moving on’ after confrontation with Bill Gates over short selling Tesla stock

Elon Musk exposed over the weekend yet another conflict he has had with liberal corporate billionaires, from whom his beliefs and actions have diverged of late.

Musk tweeted cryptically, “Moving on . . .” on Sunday morning, leading to speculation about whether he was giving up on trying to buy Twitter and take it private to preserve free speech on the platform.

The billionaire tech founder and CEO later clarified that his tweet referred to a back-and-forth he had with Bill Gates about Gates’ attempt to short sell Tesla stock to the tune of half a billion dollars. Short selling happens when the seller thinks the stock price is going to fall.

Musk calls out hypocrisy on the left

Musk questioned Gates’ so-called commitment to combatting climate change, suggesting it was hypocritical when Gates was short-selling Tesla, the foremost seller of electric cars.

Musk followed up the initial tweet by saying he was moving on “(from making fun of Gates for shorting Tesla while claiming to support climate change action).”

In a screenshot Musk posted on Friday night, he revealed that Gates wanted to discuss “philanthropy possibilities” with Musk, but that Musk shut Gates down.

“Sorry, I cannot take your philanthropy on climate change seriously when you have a massive short position against Tesla, the company doing the most to solve climate change,” Musk told Gates, according to the screenshot.

Gates has not commented publicly on the screenshot or Musk’s comments.

Still trying

Musk is still making efforts to buy Twitter after board members employed a “poison pill” to prevent him from buying more of the social media platform’s stock. He currently owns 9.4% of Twitter stock.

On Thursday, Musk submitted a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission that said he was looking into a tender offer to buy Twitter for $46.5 billion in cash and financing, paying $54.20 per share for the stock.

Musk wants to see Twitter stop censoring speech it doesn’t like, based on particular political viewpoints.
