Email shows CBS anchor falsely accused Trump of lying about passports

Former President Donald Trump has long accused members of the mainstream media of propagating “fake news” and this week provided another example of that accusation being justified.

That occurred when CBS Evening News anchor Norah O’Donnell accused Trump of lying about the FBI seizing his passports. Yet as Western Journal contributor Matthew Holloway pointed out, one image proved otherwise.

CBS anchor disputes Trump’s passport claim

The story began last week when federal agents raided Trump’s home at his Mar-a-Lago resort to search for classified documents. Trump subsequently complained in a post on Truth Social that the FBI had confiscated three of his passports.

“Wow! In the raid by the FBI of Mar-a-Lago, they stole my three Passports (one expired), along with everything else,” he declared.

“This is an assault on a political opponent at a level never seen before in our Country. Third World!” the former president added.

In response, O’Donnell took to Twitter where she claimed on Monday that an unnamed source within the Department of Justice (DOJ) told her no passports were taken.

However, Holloway noted that O’Donnell’s report was quickly contradicted less than half by a tweet from  Trump’s director of communications, Taylor Budowich.

It included a screenshot of an email from DOJ official Jay Bratt which acknowledged that agents had indeed taken the passports.

“We have learned that the filter agents seized three passports belonging to President Trump, two expired and one being his active diplomatic passport,” it read. “We are returning them, and they will be ready for pickup at WFO at 2 pm today.”

According to the New York Post, the FBI later released a statement that explained that it “follows search and seizure procedures ordered by courts, then returns items that do not need to be retained for law enforcement purposes.”
