‘Entire top brass’ of Palestinian Islamic jihad killed by Israeli military

The Israeli Defense Forces continued to take out top Palestinian Islamic Jihad leaders following the assassination of Khaled Mansour, reporting on Saturday that the entire top brass of the organization have now been killed.

“This organization tried to carry out a deadly attack against Israeli citizens and IDF soldiers by launching an anti-tank guided missile, to kill civilians and soldiers,” Maj. Gen. Oded Basiuk said in a press conference Saturday. “We hit and foiled the chain [who sought to] execute this attack.”

Unlike some Hamas leaders who have stopped calling for Israel’s destruction, PIJ’s stance has not softened.

Prime Minister Yair Lapid said Friday during a television appearance Friday that the group was “an Iranian proxy that wants to destroy the state of Israel.”

Cease-fire agreed to

PIJ is thought to number between 1,000 and several thousand members.

The clashes, which killed 10 people on Friday, were the worst in at least a year. One child, a five-year-old, was among those killed.

In all, 43 people were killed over the weekend and more than 300 were injured.

The Washington Post reported that Israel and Gaza militants declared a cease-fire late Sunday after the weekend’s fighting.

The cease-fire is to begin at 11:30 p.m. Sunday, with Israel agreeing but reserving the right to respond if it is again attacked.

Dire situation for Gaza

It is a critical time for the Gaza region as electricity supplies and hospital resources are on the verge of collapse.

Prior to killing Mansour, Israel began the fighting by killing Islamic Jihad’s Tayseer Jabari, the group’s chief of operations in the northern Gaza Strip.

PIJ fired 600 rockets and projectiles at Israel during the fighting, but most were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system. Israel reported that it struck 140 targets with its own missiles during the fighting.
