Eric R. Holder Jr. convicted of first-degree murder in 2019 shooting death of Nipsy Hussle

A Los Angeles jury found Eric R. Holder Jr. guilty Wednesday of first-degree murder in the 2019 shooting death of rapper Nipsy Hussle.

Hussle and Holder were members of the same South Los Angeles gang for years before the shooting. The two met outside the rapper’s clothing store and Holder shot Hustle after Hustle accused him of being an informant for the police.

Holder did not deny that he shot Hustle, but his lawyer asked the jury to find him guilty of voluntary manslaughter, claiming the crime was done in the heat of passion over the accusations against him.

Prosecutors said there were nine minutes between the conversation and the shooting, which showed it was premeditated–and the jury apparently agreed.

Abundance of evidence

There was an abundance of evidence about of Holder’s part in the shooting, from eyewitnesses to surveillance cameras that captured Holder arriving, shooting Hustle, and then leaving.

The trial commenced on June 15, and the jury deliberated for six hours over two days before giving their verdict.

Holder was also convicted of two counts of attempted voluntary manslaughter.

Hussle was 33 years old and had just released his first major-label album, which got him a Grammy nomination, when he was shot and killed.

Beloved member of the community

His real name was Ermias Asghedom. He left behind a long term partner, Lauren London, and two children, one from a previous relationship.

Spotify said Hussle earned his place in the rap community with a series of underground mix tapes, and was a “beloved member of the community.” His top five songs on the platform have tens to hundreds of millions of listens each.

PBS noted that Hussle’s music was about how he turned his life around and that in addition to owning several businesses in the community, he was involved in neighborhood improvement projects including playground renovations and a public art inititative.
