The Taliban is once again in control of Afghanistan — and experts around the world are hitting the panic button.
According to Fox News, sources say that another 9/11-type terrorist attack is now much more likely than it was just months ago.
“More physical space and more breathing space”
One of the experts cited in the report is Dr. Tom Copeland, who specializes in intelligence failures and mass-casualty terrorist attacks. He is currently the director of research for the Centennial Institute.
According to Copeland, the U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan and the subsequent Taliban takeover will give terrorists — including al Qaeda — to once again begin planning and executing attacks throughout the West.
“Having an entire country as a safe haven will give [al Qaeda] more physical space and more breathing space to reconstitute and go back to planning major events, so I think the U.S. withdrawal itself is a large part of that threat,” he said.
Copeland went on to explain that even though America is likely better equipped to defend against such an attack than it was in 2001, U.S. officials will be operating at a disadvantage without an embassy, military bases, or CIA stations in Afghanistan.
All things considered, he predicted that a terrorist attack would be likely at some point over the next several years.
“It does take time to plan these spectacular events”
“They said al Qaeda might take two years to reconstitute itself but it sounds like from what I’ve read, they’re thinking they could do it in six months,” Copeland said. “Now, that doesn’t mean we’ll have an attack in six months, it does take time to plan these spectacular events.”
The policy expert shared his belief that “in the next four to five years we should anticipate at least efforts by al Qaeda and ISIS and other groups that may form in the aftermath here.”
Military historian and writer Victor Davis Hanson echoed Copeland’s remarks in a statement to Fox News, predicting that “the next three and a half years” will present the most danger to America of any period since the 1950s.
“Iran, China, and Russia will in the next year likely become far more adventurous in our experience on the expectation that the Biden administration, the woke Pentagon, and the politicized intelligence agencies either cannot or will not deter them,” he said. “That encourages the Taliban who feel that the U.S. will be pressed simultaneously by several enemies and won’t dare confront them.”
Unfortunately, it appears that as the Biden administration continues, the world is becoming an increasingly dangerous place.
