Family tragedy: Former President Trump is taking another Trump to court

Former President Donald Trump is taking his niece to court.

Breitbart reports that Donald Trump filed a lawsuit against Mary Trump as well as a few journalists from the New York Times on Tuesday.

This lawsuit comes after Mary Trump identified herself as the one who leaked her uncle’s confidential tax information to the New York Times during the summer of 2020. Mary made the admission in a tell-all book that she had published.

The reader may remember that the Times, after receiving that tax information, ran with an article that claimed that Donald Trump “engaged in suspect tax schemes” as he “reaped riches from his father.”

The three journalists involved in the publication of that article were Susanne Craig, David Barstow, and Russell Buettner. The three received a Pulitzer Prize for their reporting.

Now, Mary Trump as well as these three journalists are facing a lawsuit from Donald Trump.

The lawsuit

In the court filing, Donald Trump accuses his niece and the three journalists of “tortuously breaching and/or interfering with his contractual rights and otherwise maliciously conspiring against him.”

“The defendants engaged in an insidious plot to obtain confidential and highly-sensitive records which they exploited for their own benefit and utilized as a means of falsely legitimizing their publicized works,” the former president’s attornies wrote.

Regarding that “insidious plot,” the lawsuit alleges that the Times reporters “needlessly sought out” Mary Trump and “convinced her to smuggle the records out of her attorney’s office.” The lawsuit then alleges that “the Times attempted to capitalize on their receipt of the confidential record through the publication of various new articles.” And, it says that Mary did the same with her book.

And, just because family is involved doesn’t mean that Trump held back punches.

In the lawsuit, he accuses Mary Trump and the Times’ journalists of being “motivated by a personal vendetta and their desire to gain fame, notoriety, acclaim and a financial windfall and were further intense to advance their political agenda.”

We’ll have to see if the former president is able to get a victory here. First appearances would suggest that he has a pretty good chance, but we’ll have to see if this remains true as more and more details are released.
