A prominent Texas Democrat appears to be on the FBI’s radar.
According to recent reports, federal agents showed up at the Laredo home of U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, as well as an office building he owns, on Wednesday. No reason was immediately given for the searches.
“Justice and the law”
According to Fox News, FBI agents could be seen taking photographs of vehicles outside the lawmaker’s home and removing various items from inside the residence.
Authorities occupied two streets near Cuellar’s home and were spotted at a building downtown that houses his campaign offices and a number of private businesses.
For her part, FBI spokesperson Rosanne Hughes confirmed only that agents were “conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity” at the locations.
“The FBI cannot provide further comment on an ongoing investigation,” she said, according to Fox.
In a statement on Wednesday evening, the congressman said he would “fully cooperate in any investigation” and is “committed to ensuring that justice and the law are upheld.”
“Trying to do their job”
Despite his Democratic Party affiliation, Cuellar has been a vocal critic of the Biden administration’s immigration policies, going so far as to call on President Joe Biden to replace Vice President Kamala Harris as the White House border czar.
“I want somebody like [former U.S. Homeland Security Secretary] Jeh Johnson, which in my opinion was a very compassionate person,” Cuellar said. “But he followed the law. I mean, he did what needed to be done.”
In September, the congressman defended Border Patrol agents against harsh criticism over the treatment of undocumented immigrants from Haiti, declaring: “We have to be careful that we don’t just automatically just blame Border Patrol. They’re trying to do their job as best as they can — and if there’s an issue, we’ll investigate.”
Cuellar has also supported moderate positions on other hot-button issues, including abortion. He has represented his district in Congress since 2004 and holds an influential position on the House Appropriations Committee.
While it remains unclear why the FBI was interested in Cuellar’s home and office this week, many critics of the bureau insist agents have conducted politically motivated investigations before. Given his contrarian views on various issues, the latest news could spark new rumors that Democrats are trying to take out one of their own for failing to fall in line with the progressive agenda.
