The unprecedented FBI/DOJ raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort is still dominating headlines, and multiple mainstream outlets are publishing wild reports regarding what might have led to the raid.
According to The Daily Wire, one of those reports, first published by The Washington Post, suggested that the FBI raided the Mar-a-Lago compound for documents relating to “Top Secret” nuclear-related data.
It’s unclear whether those documents are something along the lines of nuclear launch codes or other nuclear-related data.
The Post noted that those familiar with the raid “did not offer any specific details on whether the alleged documents on nuclear weapons were about weapons that were possessed by the United States or a foreign nation.”
What’s going on?
The problem with that report, and others like it, is timing, according to many observers. Not only did the DOJ work with Trump and his team back in June, reportedly fully aware of the documents that were being stored there, but they also can’t explain the warrant timing.
A judge signed off on the raid warrant on the Friday before the Monday morning pre-dawn raid. Many have questioned why — if the documents were so sensitive that they required a raid to retrieve — did the FBI wait until the weekend had passed to go get them.
Regardless, David Laufman, the former chief of the Justice Department’s counterintelligence section, was quoted in the WaPo report attempting to explain what had happened.
“If that is true, it would suggest that material residing unlawfully at Mar-a-Lago may have been classified at the highest classification level,” Laufman said.
He added: “If the FBI and the Department of Justice believed there were top secret materials still at Mar-a-Lago, that would lend itself to greater ‘hair-on-fire’ motivation to recover that material as quickly as possible.”
Mr. Trump, and some of his attorneys and inner circle, have spent the past several days responding to the situation in real-time.
“The government could have had whatever they wanted, if we had it. They asked us to put an additional lock on a certain area – DONE! Everything was fine, better than that of most previous Presidents, and then, out of nowhere and with no warning, Mar-a-Lago was raided, at 6:30 in the morning, by VERY large numbers of agents, and even ‘safecrackers.’ They got way ahead of themselves. Crazy!” Trump said in a statement.
He added: “Just learned that agents went through the First Lady’s closets and rummaged through her clothing and personal items.”
