President Joe Biden’s first days in office involved a lot of backpedaling on his predecessor’s policies, particularly in the realm of immigration. Now, amid criticism that Biden’s reversals prompted a spiraling crisis at the U.S.–Mexico border, it seems one judge has had enough.
According to The Hill, a federal judge said Friday that the Biden administration must reinstate the “Remain in Mexico” policy made famous by former President Donald Trump.
“Big win for border security”
According to The Hill, U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk found the Biden administration had acted improperly when it terminated the “Remain in Mexico” policy, which is formally known as the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), earlier this year.
Under its provisions, migrants seeking to file a request for asylum in America are required to do so from outside the United States, often while waiting in Mexico.
A 2019 Department of Homeland Security (DHS) press release explained that the rule was intended to “help restore a safe and orderly immigration process” as well as decrease the number of those taking advantage of the immigration system.”
Also mentioned was the need to reduce “the ability of smugglers and traffickers to prey on vulnerable populations” while addressing “threats to life, national security, and public safety.”
According to The Daily Wire, Kacsmaryk’s ruling came as a result of a lawsuit filed by Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, both Republicans.
Schmitt, for his part, celebrated the win on social media, writing in a tweet: “Big win for border security!”
Paxton soon followed suit with a tweet that claimed the Biden administration had “unlawfully tried to shut down the legal and effective Remain-in-Mexico program, but Texas and Missouri wouldn’t have it.”
“Together we sued,” the Republican AG said, “and just handed Biden yet another major loss!”
The Daily Wire also noted that Friday’s ruling came as new figures released by DHS showed America just experienced its worst month for illegal border crossings in nearly two decades.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents were said to have apprehended 212,672 migrants in July, a record-setting figure for the Department of Homeland Security, The Daily Wire revealed.
