First gentleman Doug Emhoff’s motorcade blocks handicapped parking spots on shopping trip

The latest entry into the annals of Democrat hypocrisy and double standards occurred last week when Doug Emhoff, husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, stopped at an upscale California grocery store, and in the process, was caught blocking the use of multiple handicapped parking spots, as the New York Post reports.

According to the outlet, the grossly insensitive display took place outside the Brentwood branch of Whole Foods, where the first gentleman popped in and grabbed two bags of items.

Motorcade monopolizes spots

Photos taken of the incident revealed that a pair of U.S. Secret Service vehicles accompanying Emhoff parked diagonally over parking places specifically marked for use by handicapped individuals, conduct that clearly runs afoul of California law.

As the Post indicated, the California Vehicle Code plainly states that “it is unlawful for any person to park or leave standing any vehicle in a stall or space designated for disabled persons and disabled veterans” in the absence of a specially labeled identification license plate or handicapped placard, something neither of the official SUVs displayed.

When asked by the Post for comment about the scenario after the fact, a spokesperson for the Secret Service declined to offer additional details, saying merely, “Due to the need to maintain operational security, the U.S. Secret Service does not comment on the means or methods used to conduct our protective operations.”

What would Kamala say?

The specter of Emhoff’s shopping trip in which parking access was eliminated for those who may have needed it the most seems to fly in the face of his wife’s declared stance on disability rights, as the Post further explained.

During Harris’ unsuccessful presidential run in the last election cycle, she pledged to help bolster access to education, employment, housing, and healthcare for the disabled.

“When we ensure that every American with disabilities is able to fully participate in our schools, our workplaces, and all aspects of our communities, our country is stronger,” Harris said in 2019, expressing a sentiment that does not exactly jibe with her husband’s visit to Whole Foods.

While serving as attorney general in California, Harris was also a member of the state’s Commission of Disability Access, something that also seems to run counter to the spirit of what happened last Wednesday.

Hypocritical par for the course

As John Nolte of Breitbart pointed out in the wake of Emhoff’s excursion, the ignorance and disregard for the disabled exemplified by the scene in Brentwood is shocking, but not particularly surprising, given the tendency of Democrats to preach one thing and do the opposite.

“As someone who needs a handicap spot for my wife, it is beyond frustrating to see people parked in those spots who don’t need them,” Nolte wrote. “It’s not the close proximity to the store as much as the extra space needed to set up the walker or wheelchair,” he added.

“It’s the arrogance and hypocrisy of these people that’s so galling,” he added. “Democrats claim to care about the handicapped, unless it might inconvenience their jaunt into Whole Foods. But that’s the beauty of being a Democrat,” and sadly, that observation has been shown to be absolutely correct – on any number of important issues impacting the American people – time and time again.
