Flordia Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) just put an end to speculation about his political future.
Fox News reports DeSantis as stating, in fairly clear terms, that he has no plan on running for the U.S. presidency in 2024.
“All the speculation about me is purely manufactured,” DeSantis said on Tuesday. “I just do my job and we work hard.”
“I hear all this stuff and honestly it’s nonsense,” he added.
For months now, polls have consistently indicated that former President Donald Trump and DeSantis are the early Republican frontrunners for 2024.
One of the most recent polls, for example, which was just released last week, had Trump easily leading the Republican field and DeSantis easily leading the Republican field without Trump. Earlier this year, in fact, DeSantis actually topped Trump in a 2024 straw poll taken at the Western Conservative Summit.
DeSantis’s popularity comes from the fact that he has adopted many policies similar to those of Trump. DeSantis, for example, has been tough on immigration and the teaching of Critical Race Theory. And, during the coronavirus pandemic, DeSantis made a name for himself for refusing to implement the sort of mandates and lockdowns implemented by his Democratic counterparts.
So, there are good reasons for DeSantis’s popularity among Republicans, and there are good reasons why DeSantis would be a strong Republican presidential candidate.
Some have suggested that the precise reason why DeSantis will not run in 2024 is that Trump will run. To be clear, Trump has yet to announce his 2024 candidacy, although he has made it clear that it is only a matter of time before he will.
Given this, talk has somewhat shifted away from a DeSantis presidential bid to a Trump-DeSantis presidential ticket. Trump, in fact, has made it clear that this is “certainly” a possibility.
“I endorsed Ron and after I endorsed him he took off like a rocket ship,” Trump said. “He’s done a great job as governor.”
For now, though, DeSantis has made it clear that his attention is going to go toward being re-elected as Florida’s governor. And, with it seeming likely that Trump won’t announce his 2024 presidential bid until after the 2022 mid-term elections, it will be some time before we know if that Trump-DeSantis ticket will become a reality.
