Bill Barr, the former attorney general of the Trump administration, just claimed that President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice (DOJ) is “taking a hard look” at former President Donald Trump and his allies.
Barr made the state on Friday during an appearance on CBS News.
The former AG has grown increasingly critical of his former boss.
This all revolves around the events of Jan. 6, 2021, the day that protestors entered the Capitol as members of Congress were certifying the Electoral College results of the 2020 presidential election.
This past week, it was reported that a federal grand jury has subpoenaed Pat Cipollone, Trump’s White House counsel. This is part of the investigation that Biden’s DOJ is leading into the events of Jan. 6, 2021.
Why Cipollone? We don’t know for sure – the details of the subpoena have not been released. But, Cipollone has been described as a key witness to what happened on Jan. 6 by several individuals on the left, particularly because of his proximity to Trump on that day.
Cipollone, it ought to be noted, has cooperated with the House committee’s Jan. 6 investigation. This is separate from the grand jury subpoena that he has now received as part of the DOJ investigation.
Barr weighs in
It was this subpoena of Cipollone that Barr discussed during his appearance on CBS News.
Barr specifically said that the subpoena of Cipollone “is a significant event,” one that “changes” his “view of what’s been going on.”
How so? Barr continued:
From my standpoint, it looked to me like the department was really focusing on the lower-level people. As you know, since the election, they’ve been going after the people who went into the Capitol. And I didn’t think they were paying that much attention to the higher-ups and were sort of leaving it to the congressional committee. But this suggests to me that they’re taking a hard look at the group at the top, including the president and the people immediately around him who were involved in this. It also looks to me that they are trying to get a ruling on executive privilege.
Does this mean that Trump is in danger of being criminally charged? Probably not – in fact, it has been reported by NBC News that the investigation “is not a criminal investigation of Trump himself.”
But, it goes to show just how desperate the left is to keep this narrative alive and to pin something on Trump.
