Former Democratic lawmaker sentenced for election fraud

For years, conservatives have been complaining that Democrats refuse to take concerns about fraudulent voting seriously.

However, Fox News reported on Sunday that a party member has just been sentenced for trying to rig an election.

Guilty pleas

According to the network, former Pennsylvania Rep. Michael “Ozzie” Myers was sentenced to 30 months in prison last week for election-related crimes stretching back almost a decade.

Myers pleaded guilty to stuffing ballots along with conspiring to illegally vote in a federal election, falsifying voter records, bribery, and depriving voters of their civil rights.

The former lawmaker’s actions aimed to help Democratic candidates during elections in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Fox News noted that this is not Myers’ first brush with the law, as the former congressman was previously convicted of bribery in 1980 after serving in the House of Representatives for four years.

DOJ statement

The Department of Justice put out a press release last Tuesday which explained that the 79-year-old defendant had been “immediately remanded into custody.”

“Protecting the legitimacy of elections is critical to ensuring the public’s trust in the process,” FBI Philadelphia Division Special Agent in Charge Jacqueline Maguire said.

“Through his actions, Ozzie Myers pointedly disdained both the will of Philadelphia voters and the rule of law,” the federal agent added.

She called Myers “a federal felon twice over” who will be “heading back behind bars, with time to consider the great consequence of free and fair elections.”

United States Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero declared, “Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy. If even one vote has been illegally cast or if the integrity of just one election official is compromised, it diminishes faith in process.”

Romero complained that the one-time representative had “used his position, knowledge of the process, and connections to fix elections for his preferred candidates, which demonstrates a truly flagrant disregard for the laws which govern our elections.” She concluded, “He will now spend 30 months in prison as penalty for his crimes.”
