Former GOP staffer pleads guilty to sharing and storing child pornography

A former Republican staffer and pedophile pled guilty to one count of receiving child pornography in federal court on Friday.

According to The Washington Times, Ruben Verastigui, 27, is facing up to 20 years in prison for the depraved crime after admitting to sharing and storing images of children being sexually abused.

The details are gut-wrenching: Verastigui fantasized about raping babies and then killing them in a chat room he shared with other pedophiles with whom he was sharing child porn, according to prosecutors.

Former GOP staffer pleads guilty

Verastigui entered his guilty plea on Friday in a videoconference from the Washington, D.C. jail where he is being kept. According to the plea agreement, he admitted to possessing 152 videos and 50 images of children being sexually abused on his phone, as well as sharing the illegal content.

According to The Hill, he allegedly told another person that pornography involving “babies” was his “absolute favorite” and asked the person to meet him in Washington to sexually abuse a minor.

Verastigui was arrested in February and his apartment was raided, at which time he admitted to using the alias “Landon” on a child porn site with at least a dozen users that the federal government began investigating in June 2020, and who remains unidentified in court documents.

“In the chat, Verastigui shared child pornography videos with another member of the group and made numerous comments about sexually abusing children,” prosecutors said.

Sick animal awaits sentencing

A former official in the Trump Commerce Department, Adam Hageman, was also arrested in the investigation in November, Politico noted.

Verastigui worked for the Republican National Committee from 2017 to 2018 as the digital director for the Joint Economic Committee in 2018, and as a digital strategist for the Senate Republican Conference from 2019 to 2020, Politico reported.

He also worked for the clean energy non-profit Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions. The organization called his actions “tragic and shocking.”

Verastigui is facing a mandatory minimum of five years in prison and up to 20 years. His sentencing is in October. Prosecutors and Verastigui agreed to a sentence of 12 to 15 years, but judge Amit Mehta has not said whether she agrees with the punishment.

Most would likely agree that he is a sick, depraved human who needs to go away for a long, long time.
