Former Maricopa County attorney Allister Adel dies weeks after resignation

Allister Adel, the former Republican prosecutor of Maricopa County, has died. She was just 45.

Adel’s family said that she passed Saturday from “health complications.” She had resigned just six weeks ago.

Her husband, David DeNitto, issued a statement on the tragic news. He said he and his wife would have been married 20 years this May.

“This May we would have celebrated 20 years of marriage. My family and I are utterly heartbroken by this unimaginable loss. We are so very proud to call Allister wife and mom,” he said.

Adel was hospitalized on March 25, her last day on the job. She had resigned after facing pressure to step aside for a drinking problem that led Adel to seek treatment in August. She had also struggled with anxiety and an eating disorder.

Five prosecutors had complained in February that Adel was missing work and was often drunk on the job.

In March, Adel was forced to drop 180 misdemeanor cases that had been filed late, past the statute of limitations.

Tributes pour in

Adel was the first woman to serve in the role. She was appointed in 2019 and had won election in 2020. On election night, she underwent an emergency surgery for a blood clot in the brain resulting from a fall.

Her successor, Rachel Mitchell, said that Adel’s “many years of service to our community leaves a legacy that impacted crime victims, first responders, and animals, just to name a few.”

Arizona’s Republican Governor Doug Ducey was also among those who expressed his condolences to Adel’s family, tweeting, “The hearts and prayers of Arizonans are with Allister’s family, colleagues and close friends. May she rest In peace.”

Adel was criticized by activists and the media for her decision to charge Black Lives Matter rioters who blocked traffic and clashed with police at a 2020 protest as members of an anti-police gang. Adel eventually dropped all charges.

Adel is survived by her husband and two kids.
