Former President Donald Trump is taking Letitia James (D), the attorney general of New York, to court.
Fox News reports that Trump on Monday filed a federal lawsuit against James looking to halt her investigation into his business practices.
For those unfamiliar with the situation, James has been investigating Trump now for over two years. She is specifically trying to determine whether Trump’s business, the Trump Organization, misled tax offices and/or banks about the value of assets.
Trump and his legal team have been battling James along the way, but they haven’t had much success. So, now they are turning to the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of New York. There, they are arguing that James has violated the former president’s Constitutional rights.
Alina Habba, the attorney representing Trump in this matter, released a statement about the new lawsuit on Monday.
“Letitia James targets President Trump with a callous disregard for the ethical and moral obligations she swore to abide by when she became Attorney General,” Habba said. “She has short-changed the state by commencing this partisan investigation and has forever tarnished the sanctity of her office.”
Habba went on to say that, with the new lawsuit, Trump is looking “to not only hold her accountable for her blatant constitutional violations, but to stop her bitter crusade to punish her political opponents in its tracks.”
We’ll see if Trump can succeed.
In a statement of her own, James accused the Trump administration of filing the lawsuit merely to “delay” her investigation.
“The Trump Organization has continually sought to delay our investigation into its business dealings and now Donald Trump and his namesake company have filed a lawsuit as an attempted collateral attack on that investigation,” James said.
To be clear, neither Mr. Trump nor the Trump Organization get to dictate if and where they will answer for their actions. Our investigation will continue undeterred because no one is above the law, not even someone with the name Trump.
James’ office, on Monday, also put out a statement noting all of the favorable legal rulings she has already received in her investigation of Trump. James appeared confident that she will also come out on top in the new lawsuit by Trump.
