Former Sen. Franken calls for the prosecution of Trump

Former Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) is calling for the prosecution of former President Donald Trump, Breitbart News reports

Franken did so during an appearance Thursday on CNN’s CNN Tonight.

There, Franken was asked to comment on the ongoing hearings that are being put on by the partisan House Jan. 6 committee, the one that is “investigating” the Capitol protests of Jan. 6, 2021.

The committee is trying to convince the American public with these hearings that Trump was behind a “seditious conspiracy” to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. On top of this, the committee is hoping that its efforts will lead to the criminal prosecution of Trump, by the Department of Justice (DOJ), for inciting an insurrection.

“He clearly committed crimes.”

Franken weighed in on the Jan. 6 hearings during his CNN appearance.

“The only thing worse than prosecuting [Trump] is not prosecuting him,” Franken said. “He clearly committed crimes. It’s so evident.”

Franken continued:

This is why I said watching this today was pathetic and tragic. Clearly, he knew he lost. His only defense, I guess, is insanity. But I don’t think that washes. I just think he’s just a malignant narcissist. I think he is just an awful human being. And clearly, he knew he lost. He said before the election, if I win, then it was a fair election. If I lose, it was fixed. I mean, what else do you need to hear?

Franken went on to say that the members of the committee are “clearly . . . trying to lay something out as easily as possible.” Referring to Trump, he said, “This guy tried to destroy our democracy.”

Will it happen?

The big question going forward is going to be whether U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland has any plans on prosecuting Trump for what happened on Jan. 6.

Garland, thus far, has been reluctant to say anything definitive on the matter. But, he is being put under tremendous pressure, particularly from members of the Jan. 6 committee, to act.

One can infer from Garland’s reluctance here that he, like many legal experts, probably does not think that Trump did anything wrong.

Time will tell, though, whether he gives in to the demands of the leftists and anti-Trump Republicans.
