Although liberals love to bash Fox News as Trump-supporting “state media,” the right-leaning network actually turned down the explosive Hunter Biden story that was eventually blown open by the New York Post, according to an exclusive report.
Mediaite reported Monday that the cable news giant rejected the story because it didn’t think the source, former New York City mayor and President Donald Trump legal advisor Rudy Giuliani, was trustworthy and doubted the story’s accuracy.
Skipping the scoop
Critics have often portrayed Giuliani as an unreliable narrator with a penchant for spreading “disinformation” to help Trump. “America’s mayor” is a close confidante of the president’s, and he played a memorable role in the impeachment saga that ended with Trump’s exoneration earlier this year.
Such thoughts may have weighed on Fox’s news division when they reportedly turned down Giuliani’s story about Hunter Biden’s laptop. However, a spokesperson for Giuliani told the Washington Examiner, “I can confirm Mayor Giuliani did not present Fox News with the content on Hunter Biden’s laptop for a story.”
The story was eventually picked up by the New York Post, which published damning emails showing that former Vice President Joe Biden knew much more about his son’s business dealings than he has let on. Fox News later verified at least one email dealing with Hunter Bidens’s business with China.
Setting aside Giuliani’s obvious political alliance with Trump, no one has successfully disputed the legitimacy of the documents themselves, and the Joe Biden campaign hasn’t even tried, as the Post notes.
Both the FBI and Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe have indicated that the emails appear to be legitimate, and are not part of a “Russian disinformation” effort, as Democrats have asserted.
Fox at arm’s length
Still, anchors from Fox’s news division including Chris Wallace and Bret Baier have said that the Hunter Biden story is suspicious.
“I can understand the concern about this story. It is completely unverified and frankly, Rudy Giuliani is not the most reliable source anymore. I hate to say that, but it’s just true,” Wallace said, according to Mediaite.
According to Fox, the FBI is reportedly in possession of Hunter Biden’s computer, the contents of which were leaked to Giuliani after being recovered by a computer repairman. Fox has also reportedly obtained documents from the repair shop with Hunter Biden’s signature, seeming to lend further credence to the New York Post‘s story. Either way, however, Fox missed the scoop on this one.
It isn’t the first time Fox News has appeared reluctant to associate with Giuliani and other conservative media figures largely considered persona non grata by the overwhelmingly left-leaning mainstream media. According to a report from The Daily Beast, Fox circulated a memo this year warning staff about Giuliani.
In September, the network came under fire from some viewers for cutting off former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich after he mentioned left-wing megadonor George Soros.
