Fox News: Dems ‘waking up to Biden’s age issue’

According to a new report from Fox News, Democrats are finally “waking up” to the fact that President Joe Biden is old, and that this could turn into a major issue going forward, especially if he seeks reelection.

The outlet reports:

Democratic heavyweights like David Axelrod, President Barack Obama’s chief strategist, are sounding the alarm about what could happen if Biden, 79, chooses to run for president again in 2024. Biden already faces heavy criticism for gaffes and misstatements many attribute to age, and he would be 86 years old at the end of a second term.

“That can’t be Biden”

Fox appears to have largely based its article on recent reporting from the New York Times. Over the weekend, the Times released a report citing “many Democratic lawmakers and party officials” as raising concerns about Biden’s ability to lead the Democratic Party going forward.

Axelrod is among those whom the Times cites. He is quoted as saying, “the presidency is a monstrously taxing job, and the stark reality is the president would be closer to 90 than 80 at the end of a second term, and that would be a major issue.”

The Times also reports several others as raising concerns about Biden’s age, such as Shelia Huggins, who is described as a lawyer and Democratic National Committee member.

“Democrats need fresh, bold leadership for the 2024 presidential race. That can’t be Biden,” Huggins is quoted as saying.

According to the Times, many of the Democrats whom it spoke with would prefer it if Biden, following the midterm elections, would just go ahead and announce that he is not running in 2024.

White House denial

The White House, this week, responded to this criticism from Democrats.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre made it clear that “as the President has said repeatedly, he plans to run in 2024.”

Jean-Pierre also participated in an interview with CNN’s Don Lemon in which she was asked directly whether Biden has the “stamina, physically and mentally,” the lead the country in a second term. A laughing Jean-Pierre’s responded, “That is not a question that we should be even asking.”

Jean-Pierre, later, dismissed the Times report as mere “hearsay,” and not something that the Biden White House cares about.

We’ll see how this all plays out. However, none of this appears to be good news for the Democrats. All signs would seem to suggest that their party is in trouble both in the midterms and in 2024.
