As the Mike Flynn case blows wide open, some are asking: what did Robert Mueller know?
If Mueller was aware that Flynn was set up by the FBI, then he should lose his license to practice law, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) said, according to the Washington Examiner.
“There is one person that I’ve got some questions for, and that’s Robert Mueller,” Gaetz said on Fox News’ Justice with Judge Jeanine Saturday. “What did Mueller know, and when did he know it?”
What did Mueller know?
Flynn has long been seen as a sympathetic figure among Trump supporters, along with Roger Stone and other Trump allies who were caught up in criminal cases that grew out of the Mueller “witch hunt.” (Maybe not Michael Cohen.) Although Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to investigators in 2017, he sought to reverse his plea this year and is now fighting the charges.
New revelations in Flynn’s case have led many conservatives to conclude that the former national security adviser was entrapped by FBI agents, as Flynn claims. Last week, documents were released which showed FBI agents candidly questioning whether their “goal” was to get Flynn to lie so they could prosecute him or get him fired. More documents revealed that key FBI agent Peter Strzok, who President Donald Trump has often lambasted as an anti-Trump conspirator, specifically kept the Flynn probe open even though no “derogatory information” had surfaced.
The new developments draw attention to the role played by Mueller, who presided over the sprawling, nearly two-year probe, in the apparent plot to railroad Flynn.
Speaking on Pirro’s show Saturday, Gaetz said that he wants to find out what Mueller knew — and that the former FBI man should face disbarment if he was aware of a conspiracy against Flynn:
Did he really come before the Judiciary Committee and make those accusations knowing that the Flynn deal was a setup directed by [former FBI Director James] Comey? If he did, Robert Mueller’s own bar license might be in question.
Gaetz said that the Mueller probe is a “joke” and that he believes Donald Trump will pardon those who have suffered unfairly because of it, including Flynn and Roger Stone, who was sentenced to over 3 years in prison for obstruction crimes and whose appeal for a re-trial was recently shot down.
“I believe that Michael Flynn will either be exonerated or pardoned. All the charges against him should be dropped, and he should be a free man,” Gaetz said. Watch the full segment below:
Gaetz calls for pardons
Gaetz isn’t the only Republican calling for answers. In the wake of the new document disclosures, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) demanded to know whether the Mueller team had suppressed the exculpatory evidence. He tweeted last week:
Did Mueller have these docs? Why did his team sit on them? What else is Mueller team that cost taxpayers $30+ million hiding? The ppl deserve answers 2restore faith in federal law enforcement agencies.
What Mueller “knew” and what input he might have had seems to be an open question ever since the former G-man’s famously confused testimony in July 2019 left many wondering if he even controlled the probe that bore his name.
Flynn’s lawyer, Sidney Powell, said this weekend that Mueller appeared to have developed some kind of “neurological problem” and that both Mueller and his top prosecutor, Andrew Weissmann, should be held accountable for a plot to destroy her client’s life.
