Attorney General Garland takes credit for having ‘personally approved’ FBI raid of Trump’s Florida home

In the aftermath of the FBI raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida on Monday, there were widespread rumors and speculation across the ideological spectrum about who had ordered the unprecedented action against the former president and chief political rival of the current president.

Days later, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that he was the one who had “personally approved” the FBI’s efforts to obtain and search warrant and conduct the raid on Trump’s south Florida home, the Daily Wire reported.

While that admission may have ended the speculation about who was ultimately responsible for the raid, it also served to fuel the perception that the raid was politically motivated persecution on behalf of Garland’s boss, President Joe Biden, against his bitterly hated partisan rival and predecessor, Trump.

Garland takes responsibility

Attorney General Garland delivered brief remarks to reporters on Thursday, but took no questions, and immediately announced his intention to unseal and publicly release the search warrant and seized property receipt related to the Monday raid of Mar-a-Lago.

Then, following some rather difficult-to-believe rhetoric about the supposed “evenhanded application of the law” and “due process” and “ethical obligations” and “integrity” — all of which have been in decidedly short supply at the hyper-politicized DOJ and FBI for several years now — Garland revealed that he was responsible for the raid against the former president.

“I personally approved the decision to seek a search warrant in this matter,” Garland said, and went on to insist that his decision had not been made “lightly.”

He also seemed to suggest that Trump himself was at fault for the publicized raid, as he intimated that he would have preferred to “seek less intrusive means as an alternative to a search, and to narrowly scope any search that is undertaken.”

The White House denies any advance knowledge of the FBI raid

Meanwhile, over at the White House, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre did her best during Tuesday’s briefing to try and distance President Biden from the highly controversial raid against his chief political opponent by insisting that he had nothing to do with it and hadn’t even been given a “heads up” prior to the occurrence of the raid.

“The President was not briefed, did not — was not aware of it. No. No one at the White House was given a heads up. No, that did not happen,” Jean-Pierre told reporters, and reiterated a few moments later, “The President and the White House learned about this FBI search from public reports. We learned, just like the American public did yesterday, and we did not have advance notice of this activity.”

The press secretary also refused to answer direct questions about if Attorney General Garland has authorized the raid on Biden’s political rival and repeatedly dodged other queries about the federal law enforcement action by directing any further questions to the DOJ itself.

Jean-Pierre also repeatedly put forward prewritten talking points about the “independent” nature of the DOJ to the White House in response to other questions, and also consistently sought to shut down all conversation about the incident by repeating some variation of how she wasn’t going to comment on an ongoing criminal investigation.

Regardless of the dizzying spin and non-answers from the White House and DOJ on this matter, it is overwhelmingly clear to many Americans that this FBI raid on Trump’s home was an unnecessary and abusive display of federal power and intimidation as part of a years-long effort to try and criminalize and disqualify and render unelectable the one man who chose to rock the boat and disrupt the increasingly evident corruption of the political establishment.
