Capping off a week defined by violence and incendiary speech, President-elect Joe Biden fueled divisions in the United States with a new set of startling talking points.
In reference to Wednesday’s riot on Capitol Hill, the former vice president ramped up tensions by claiming that police would have dealt with protesters differently if they had been affiliated with the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, the New York Post reported.
The siege of the U.S. Capitol building this week left five people dead — including a Trump supporter who was fatally shot and a police officer who died as a result of injuries he sustained during the mayhem.
Referring to participants as “domestic terrorists,” Biden accused rioters of attempting to start an insurrection at the direction of the president, the Wall Street Journal reported. Critics soon started calling him out for his charged rhetoric, though, with his assertion that the nation’s police officers engage in selective enforcement of the law.
“No one can tell me that if it had been a group of Black Lives Matter protesting yesterday, they wouldn’t have been treated very, very differently than the mob of thugs that stormed the Capitol,” Biden said, according to the New York Post. “We all know that’s true, and it is unacceptable. Totally unacceptable.”
Despite his claims of soft treatment by police toward the pro-Trump protesters in D.C. this week, the fact remains that one Trump supporter was shot and killed by police while countless others were subjected to physical restraint and tear gas while engaging in the unlawful breach.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), for his part, joined in the criticism of Biden’s remarks, asserting that “he goes off for 20 minutes and talks about everything that happened last summer, and if this was Black protesters, the police would have responded differently,” according to The Washington Times.
“This is complete nonsense”
Conservative writer A.G. Hamilton, for example, said the true difference in treatment between the two groups of rioters lies in their respective receptions by prominent leftists.
“This is complete nonsense,” he said, according to the New York Post. “It’s gaslighting that requires ignoring what we actually witnessed on a nightly basis last summer.”
According to one Twitter user, Biden was right in asserting that BLM protesters would have been treated differently, asserting: “Correct: They’d be celebrated by the press and lionized by politicians.”
Townhall’s Julio Rosas, who covered the summer’s riots, explained that “[t]ear gas, pepper balls, pepper spray, and flashbangs were all used [at the Capitol], just as they were used on rioters in 2020.”
