Donald Trump is exposing fake “conservatives” one by one.
The president will not be getting any support this November from columnist George Will, who announced Monday that he is formally supporting Joe Biden, the Washington Examiner reported.
George Will declares support for Biden
A former Republican, Will is just the latest establishment conservative to support the Democratic party’s crusade against President Trump. The Washington Post fixture made his decision official in an USA Today interview in which he replied without hesitation that Biden is his preferred candidate.
“I’ve nothing against Democrats. But I’ve never had the occasion to vote for one,” he told editor Susan Page, according to The Hill.
Never, that is, until now. Indeed, so profound is the danger supposedly presented by President Trump that conservatives apparently have no choice but to support the candidate of the radical left.
In a 2016 column, Will previewed this reasoning by making the argument that surrendering control of the White House for one term was a necessary evil for GOP that would ensure its continued existence.
“If Trump is nominated, Republicans working to purge him and his manner from public life will reap the considerable satisfaction of preserving the identity of their 162-year-old party while working to see that they forgo only four years of the enjoyment of executive power,” he wrote at the time.
Never Trumpers close ranks
Like the rest of the anti-Trump right, Will had been drifting in this direction for quite some time. He left the Republican party in 2016 and cast a write-in vote for Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE), according to the Examiner. In 2018 he advocated voting Republicans out of office, as The Hill noted, and now, he’s going all-in for the Democrats.
He’s not alone. With the election looming, Republicans who never accepted Trump’s victory are coming out of hiding in what is a remarkable display of establishmentarian solidarity.
According to Fox News, a number of Bush-era Republicans have pledged their support for Biden, including Colin Powell and a Super PAC of Bush alumni, and a group of Republicans calling themselves the Lincoln Project have launched an ad blitz against the president. It was also revealed this week that John Kasich, the former Republican governor of Ohio Trump clobbered in the 2016 primary, will speak at the Democratic National Convention on behalf of Biden, as Forbes reported.
The “Never Trump” Republicans say that the president has corrupted the GOP into a cult of personality without principles. But there’s nothing particularly principled about supporting an opposition party that wants to destroy the country. That’s just idiocy.
Who will be the next “conservative” to join the radical left? Only time will tell.
