Gold Star father targets Biden over false debate claim

 June 29, 2024

Gold Star families are outraged by President Joe Biden's claim, at the recently held presidential debate, that no U.S. troops have died under his administration.

What has them outraged, of course, is that Biden's claim is egregiously false.

This is according to a new report from the Daily Mail. The outlet, following the debate, spoke with some of the family members of those U.S. service members who died during Biden's botched withdrawal from Afghanistan, in August 2021.

For those unfamiliar with the term "Gold Star Families," the USO explains, "The title, which is reserved for families of military members who have died in the line of duty, is meant to honor the service member’s ultimate sacrifice while acknowledging their family’s loss, grief and continued healing."

In case you missed the debate, we'll catch you up to speed concerning what Biden said about troops not dying on his watch.

At one point, during a back-and-forth exchange between Biden and former President Donald Trump, Biden said, "The truth is, I'm the only president this century, that doesn't have any - this decade - that doesn't have any troops dying anywhere in the world, like he did."

This is patently false.

"[D]uring the Biden administration’s disastrous withdrawal of U.S. troops and assets from Afghanistan, on Aug. 26, 2021, 13 U.S. service members were killed outside of Hamid Karzai International Airport," Fox News reports.

This leaves us with the question of whether Biden simply forgot about the death of these individuals or whether, somehow, Biden does not consider this a loss of U.S. troops on his watch.

Afghanistan Gold Star families respond

Among others, the Daily Mail spoke with Darin Hoover, who lost his son Taylor Hoover, a 31-year-old Marine Corps staff sergeant.

"When Biden said that not one person in the military was killed under his watch, I yelled at what I was hearing," Hoover said.

He added, "I  knew that I'd heard what I did, but couldn't believe he had the audacity to say it. Had he forgotten our 13 kids? Did he not remember standing on the tarmac at the dignified transfer? Did he not remember checking his watch over and over and over again?? We've called him out several times for it!!"

Hoover, here, is referring to the fact that Biden was caught checking his watch within seconds of a salute honoring the 13 service members who died in Afghanistan.

Hoover concluded, saying, "Biden can't put Afghanistan in his rearview mirror fast enough and yet it keeps coming back to haunt him. To say that I was outraged would be a gross understatement!! Our 13 kids and their family and friends, deserve much more than what the old fool has given them, which is absolutely nothing."
