Several congressional Republicans are floating the idea of having President Joe Biden removed from office, following the recent Afghanistan mishap, which saw America fleeing as the Taliban seized control of the country.
Among these Republicans is Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL). On Monday, Scott suggested that it might be time to invoke the 25th Amendment against Biden.
“After the disastrous events in Afghanistan, we must confront a serious question: Is Joe Biden capable of discharging the duties of his office or has time come to exercise the provisions of the 25th Amendment? Scott asked.
In a previous tweet, Scott noted some of the negative consequences that have resulted so far from the Biden administration. He wrote:
Inflation is raging. The debt ceiling expired & U.S. debt is headed to $45 TRILLION. Kabul is falling to the Taliban & encounters in the #BidenBorderCrisis just hit a 20 YEAR HIGH. Democrats control the House, Senate & @WhiteHouse. What in the world is Joe Biden doing?
A 25th Amendment removal of a president is for when a president is “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.” The idea has been floated a lot in recent times, going back to the Trump administration.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), on the other hand, is calling for a more traditional impeachment of Biden.
In fact, Greene has said that she has her “team right now working on articles of impeachment.”
“I have my team right now working on articles of impeachment,” Greene added. “Because I’m so disgusted with Joe Biden. You know I’ve already filed one set of articles of impeachment. But his failure as a president is unspeakable.”
Both chambers call for, at least, a probe
In the Senate, Scott is among those Republicans who are also arguing that there ought to be a congressional investigation of Biden’s handling of the Afghanistan situation.
Knowing that the Democrats would be against the idea, Scott called on Democratic leadership to “put partisan politics aside and demand accountability from the Biden administration.”
In the House, it is Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) who is calling for such a congressional investigation. McCarthy has called Biden’s handling of the Afghanistan situation a “mistake that will haunt us for decades.”
We’ll see if congressional Republicans are able to put any of these ideas into action.
