GOP congressman threatens DHS secretary with impeachment over proposed border change

America is seeing a massive influx of illegal migrants across its southern border. Yet as the Daily Wire reported this week, that isn’t stopping the White House from allowing a major Trump-era border regulation to expire.

In response, one Republican member of Congress recently warned Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas that his inaction is grounds for impeachment.

The Daily Wire noted in October that Title 42 is a rule implemented during the Trump administration which allows illegal immigrants to be swiftly deported on the grounds that they could contribute to the COVID pandemic.

GOP congressman: Ending Title 42 would be “an impeachable offense”

That legal provision has been condemned by many on the left, with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer tweeting last fall that the Biden administration “must uphold our refugee laws and stop Title 42 deportations.”

However, The Daily Wire announced on Monday that it has obtained a copy of a letter sent to Mayorkas by Texas Rep. Chip Roy (R).

In his letter, Roy warned the secretary that ending Title 42 would “be unconscionable and, without question, an impeachable offense in its own right.”

“Sadly, the use of Title 42 authority has been the lone vestige of southern border security policy the United States has conducted under your leadership,” the Republican lawmaker asserted.

“In fact, since you became Secretary, your Department has used Title 42 as the basis for almost ALL of those refused entry,” Roy continued, suggesting that the number of people allowed into the United States would skyrocket without Title 42 being in effect.

“Though prior to your assumption of the post of DHS Secretary more than 80% were turned away and now only 50% – at least there was some brake,” he concluded.

Even some Democrats question the wisdom of ending Title 42

Interestingly, the Daily Wire pointed out that even some Democrats have raised concerns about what the impact will be if Title 42 is abolished.

They include Sens. Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly, both of whom represent Arizona. Roll Call reported last week that the pair sent a letter of their own asking that DHS draw up a border plan before Title 42 is done away with.

They caution that an abrupt end to the regulation “would significantly increase the strain on DHS, border communities, and local nonprofits that are already near or at capacity.”
