A shocking new report surfaced this week indicating that the Biden administration is considering handing out payments of up to $450,000 to undocumented immigrants impacted by former President Donald Trump’s zero-tolerance immigration policy.
In response, various Republican lawmakers have reacted with outrage and condemnation.
“Biden wants to pay illegal immigrants”
The backlash began with Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), who argued that the notion would exacerbate the current southern border crisis.
“It would be unthinkable to pay damages to a burglar who broke into your home for the ‘psychological trauma’ they endured during the crime. And yet the Biden administration wants to reward migrants who illegally entered our country with up to $450,000 each for just that reason,” he said.
The Arkansas Republican went on to accuse the Biden administration of causing “the worst border crisis in history,” asserting that “a huge cash reward will make it worse.”
Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) took the criticism even further with a startling comparison.
“Biden wants to pay illegal immigrants $450,000 for their hardship while breaking our laws,” he wrote. “For perspective, if a service member is killed in action, their next of kin gets an insurance payment of $400,000. Let that sink in.”
“Biden is putting America last”
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) provided a different comparison, writing: “Yet another way President Biden is putting America last: Lawyers in his own administration admit payouts to illegal immigrants could be more than the families of the fallen from 9/11 received. Disgraceful.”
As for whom the Biden administration is considering these payments, the Wall Street Journal offered some clarity.
The proposed plan comes in response to lawsuits filed by undocumented immigrants whose families were separated as a result of Trump’s policies. Attorneys in the case are calling for $3.4 million to be paid to each affected family.
Although Biden’s reparations proposal would be considerably lower, it would still cost American taxpayers as much as $1 billion if approved. The president’s lax approach to immigration law enforcement has already negatively impacted his approval rating and this plan is likely to make matters worse.
As Cotton concluded in his statement on the matter: “This is the height of insanity.”
