Now that Republicans have managed to capture a majority lead in the House of Representatives, to begin in the new session in January, major changes in committee assignments are coming down the pipeline.
According to the Washington Examiner, House Minority Leader and likely future Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has vowed to remove a group of radical, progressive Democrats from several committees.
The moves will undoubtedly cause massive backlash on the left.
McCarthy made the announcement over the weekend at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s 2022 leadership, held in Las Vegas, Nevada, this year.
What’s happening?
For one, it appears that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) will lose her assignment on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
“We watched antisemitism grow, not just on our campuses, but we’ve watched it grow in the halls of Congress,” McCarthy said in the lead-up to the announcement.
He added: “You know I made another promise to you last time. There was this congresswoman, Ilhan Omar. I remember what she said about me. I remember what she said about Israel. I remember what she said about the [U.S.-Israel] relationship. I remembered it so much, I promised you last year she would no longer be on foreign affairs. I’m keeping that promise.”
Omar has made numerous controversial anti-semitic remarks that are magically all but ignored by leaders in her own party.
McCarthy first made the promise in a Fox News interview — a promise it appears he’ll stick to.
“I will promise you this. If we are fortunate enough to have the majority, Omar would not be serving on Foreign Affairs or anybody that has an antisemitic, anti-American view. That is not productive, and that is not right.”
Who else?
Other high-profile Democrats, such as Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) also stand to lose their assignment, according to PJ Media.
It’ll certainly be interesting to see who fills the vacancies and who else might lose their assignments.
